You have to lose 41 sides to win. (He has 32 sides total.)

You'll make a move, and then he'll make a move. If he takes your 20:2 with his 20:4, and rerolls the 20 to be 13 (or one of the other safe numbers) and takes one of your 12:9 on the following turn, he'll have only taken 32 sides, and so you'll lose. So I'm pretty sure that any move that lets the 20:4 reroll cannot guarantee victory.

So I'm pretty sure it starts with taking 20:4, for example with the 30:6. On his next turn, he'll have to either take the 20:2 or the 30:1. Let's say he takes the 30:1 with the 6:5 and rerolls 1, and the ornery die rerolls to 1 too. In that case, you can't force him to take the 2, so I'm not sure how you can guarantee victory here either.

you know, looking at this now, over a week after I posted it, I think you're right. while the best move is indeed taking his 20-sided die with my 30-sided die, it doesn't quite "ensure" victory -- assuming he makes the right response, he has 1 chance in 36 of getting a situation with at least 10/11 chance of his winning.
