From a game today -- what would you do?

Maybe this is obvious, but I do think there's a point worth making here, too.

Should I take his die with value 17 using mine with value 18? Should I take his
die with value 9 using mine with value 10? Any other bright ideas?

In situations like this, I am more inclined to take the 20-sided showing 9 with the 20-sided showing 10. There is no way for the person to come back and take the 18-sided right away, and there's only a 4-in-20 (14,18,19,20) that it would be possible to take it next turn by re-rolling the 20, and only a 1-in-4 chance with the 4-sided.

It's a tricky call. In this case, if you take all of his dice and are left with just the 8 sider, then you lose.

So, I'm going to go with a wacky idea and take his 4 sider with my 12 sider, hoping for a decent roll.

It's a little bit sideways thinking, but if you can force him to reroll the 17, you stand a chance of getting away with it. No clue on the odds, though.

I'd go with the 20-sided showing 10 taking the 20-sided showing 9.

To take the 4-sided die would allow him to reroll his 20-sided showing 9 even higher, which might be dangerous. (Almost 50% of the time it would roll about 10, making it harder for you to take.)

You're gambling that he won't reroll his D20 to be a 19 or 20. I think you're safe as long as you protect your D20; so he has two shots at that 1-in-10 roll.

So yeah, definitely, take the D20 showing 9. That should be a winning play!

I would play the 10 takes 9 strategy too. Then chances are he only gets to take two more dice. You're certain to still be able to capture the 4 on your next turn, so as long as your 18 remains top dog you will win.

If you play 18 takes 17, then you might roll under 9 (or 13), 50% chance, and then he can roll his 9 and maybe get over your 10 (almost 50% chance, more like 40% because he'll have to avoid 14 and 18 too) ... so it looks like something like a 20% chance of losing that way. On the other hand with your 18 there's only maybe a 10% chance of losing. Yeah, rough numbers, but it looks like hanging on to the 18 is the right thing to do.
