I can't win the initiative here: if i. chooses to contest it, he'll beat me. And I can't turn down my d20 to a safe value while temporarily gaining initiative. Yet I think there may be another very good reason to turn down my focus dice here, do you see it? Do you agree?

I'm thinking that you're trying to force irilyth's (20) to reroll. If you leave your dice as they are, all irilyth has to do to make his (20) safe is capture your f(8) or f(20).
If instead, you turn down your focus dice both down to 1, then irilyth has no certain way to safeguard the (20), and thus is forced to roll it if he wants to try to keep it safe.
That's right, though another way to do it is to turn one down to "1" and the other down to "2", no matter what i. does, I'll be able to sum to 8 when it's my turn. Yours works, too.
