simple, but I did have to stop for a moment

I have only two choices here. We can -- and should -- do the math, but which one do you think is better?

That's elegant, because there's no need to do the math. You know you're losing the (12), so you can just pretend it isn't there. After that, you're either going to take both dice, or take one and irilyth takes your (10). Taking the poison is a little worse than irilyth taking your (10) because 12 is bigger than 10. So you know what you prefer, and you're done: go with the option where that might not happen, and take the (4).

As it turns out, the math is such that you're guaranteed the win if you do that, but it doesn't actually matter. I know avoiding capturing poison has a reputation as a novice move, but sometimes it's strictly the right thing to do.
