an even fainter chance of rolling a 20 -- but with the not-inconsiderable risk of having the die roll low and be recaptured by his little die?
Or should I take his d20 with my d8 and d5, which are currently showing their maximum and reroll
THEM -- leaving my d20 still vulnerable, and risking losing my little dice without any real compensation?

I can't see any benefit at all to rerolling your 8er and 5er, since then your 20er will definitely be captured and those smaller ones will almost certainly be in worse shape than they are. Yes, if you use your 20er it might get captured by TheUniverse's smaller dice... but your 20er is a goner anyway.
Keep your 8er and 5er pinned, and after your 20er gets taken you might be able use your 4er to make the 8er and 5er safe from all except TheUniverse's remaining 20er...
I'm not saying this is necessarily persuasive, but consider: TheUniverse isn't likely to capture the 20-sided die next turn, since he exposes his own 20-sided die to a greater chance of capture by doing so; most people wait until the last possible moment to make such a capture when there are fewer other dice left to make the recapture. If that's right, it may make sense to wait to reroll my own 20-sider until 1 turn later, when *it* may have a somewhat better chance of avoiding capture by his lower-valued dice as there will be fewer of them left.
Hey, I am checking this blog using the phone and this appears to be kind of odd. Thought you'd wish to know. This is a great write-up nevertheless, did not mess that up.
